Gem Stone Descriptions/Properties

Note:  when reading the description of a stone where a particular color is specified, also read the stone’s description without the color name.  The attributes of the stones of particular colors are in addition to the attributes listed under the stone’s name alone.

Agate -- harmonizes yin and yang, sooths and calms, and brings great strength.  It builds self-confidence, aids self-analysis, and enhances mental function.  It raises consciousness and aids in collective consciousness, encouraging contemplation and leading to spiritual growth.  It stabilizes the aura, providing for a cleansing effect, which acts to smooth dysfunctional energies and to both transform and eliminate negativity.  In historic times, it was placed in water to dispel sickness.  Agates can be used to stimulate analytical capabilities and precision, provide perceptiveness to situations and awaken one’s inherent talents.

Amethyst – extremely powerful and protective stone with a high spiritual vibration.  It is beneficial to the mind especially during meditation.  It calms, synthesizes, and aids the transition of neural signals in the brain enhancing memory and improving motivation.  It balances highs and lows and promotes emotional centering, alleviating sadness and grief.  It is one of the most spiritual stones promoting love of the divine and spiritual wisdom.

Angelite – is a “stone of awareness” representing peace and brotherhood.  It facilitates conscious contact with the angelic realm, enhances telepathic communication and enables out-of-body experiences.  A powerful stone for healers, it deepens attunements and heightens perception, providing protection for the environment or the body.  It helps the bearer to speak the truth, increases compassion, enhances astrological understanding, brings a deeper understanding of math and facilitates telepathy.  It transmutes pain and disorder, opens the way for spiritual inspiration, creates a deep feeling of peace, helps connect to Universal Knowledge, stimulates healing and opens psychic channeling.

Aquamarine -- is a stone of courage.  It stimulates, activates and cleanses the throat charka.  It encourages the innate ability to “always be prepared”.  It can be used to balance and fortify the glands.

Aventurine – a positive stone of prosperity that absorbs electromagnetic smog and protects against environmental pollution.  It reinforces leadership qualities and decisiveness, promoting compassion, empathy and perseverance.   

Black Tourmaline - to cleanse, purify, clear, balance, protect, promote self-confidence, diminish fear, and attract inspiration and compassion. A stone of protection, it dispels electromagnetic smog, radiation, psychic attack, spells and ill wishes, and negative energies of all kinds.  It grounds, providing for further enhancement of one’s well being.

Black Kyanite -- calms and protects, transforming negative energy into white light.  It can be used with blue kyanite to simultaneously align and cleanse the charkas.  It helps to balance the yin/yang energies.

Blue Kyanite – for attunement and meditation, connection to spirit guides, promoting compassion and healing dreams.  It does not hold negativity and never requires cleaning and cleanses other stones.  It has a calming effect, encourages speaking ones truth, cutting through fears and blockages, encouraging self-expression.

Blue Lace Agate – a cooling and calming healing stone.  A bringer of peace of mind, it allows freedom of expression opening the way to higher energies; neutralizing anger, infection, inflammation and fever.  It gently dissolves old patterns of repression and encourages new modes of expression while neutralizing anger. 

Blue Tiger’s Eye – a calming stone that helps to release stress, it aides the overanxious, phobic and quick-tempered.  It slows the metabolism, cools an overactive sex drive and dissolves sexual frustration.

Botswana Agate – beneficial to those who want to stop smoking.  It looks to solutions rather then dwelling on problems, and helps to see the bigger picture.  It releases repression and assimilates oxygen in the body. 

Carnelian – grounds and anchors in the present reality, stabilizing and restoring vitality, motivation and creativity.  It promotes courage, positive life choices and motivation for success in business.  It helps overcome abuse of any kind and encourages trust in yourself and your perceptions. 

Chalcedony – a powerful cleanser that fosters the maternal instinct, improves mineral assimilation, and lessens the effects of dementia and senility.  It increases physical energy and balances the body, emotions, mind and spirit.  It is a nurturing stone that promotes brother/sister hood, good will, and group stability. 

Cherry Quartz – see Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz – the most powerful healing and energy amplifying stone on the planet.  It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy and can be used to amplify both energy and thought.   It cleanses and enhances the organs, the soul, and the subtle bodies connecting the physical dimension with the mind.  It dissolves karmic seeds and attunes to the spiritual purpose, unlocking memory and bringing the body into balance.  Traditionally the natural quartz crystal was said to both harmonize and align human energies.  Wherever worn or carried, it also tends to cancel the harmful effects of radiation and radioactivity.

Clear Quartz, Double Terminated -- symbolizes patience and perseverance.  It is also useful in providing protection from physical and mental harm.

Citrine – a powerful cleanser and regenerator carrying the power of the sun.  It promotes creativity, never needs cleansing, and absorbs, transmutes, dissipates and grounds negative energy. It is a stone of abundance, teaching how to manifest and attract wealth, success and all good things.  

Elestial Quartz -- contains the absolute and ultimate essential wisdom.  It can be used to both sustain and maintain during changes.

Emerald -- can be used to enhance the memory and to stimulate the use of greater mental capacity.   It is a stone to bring harmony to all areas of one’s life.  It is dais to bring beneficial consequences to matters involving legal affairs.  It is also a good money stone.

Fluorite -- highly protective, shutting out psychic manipulation and undue mental influence, cleansing and stabilizing the aura, and drawing off negative energies and stress.  It cleanses, purifies, dispels and reorganizes anything within the body that is not in perfect order.

Fresh Water Pearl – brings truth and loyalty.  It signifies integrity, charity, faith and innocence, inhibiting boisterous behavior and providing a reflection of one’s self that one may see how she/he appears to others.

Garnet – a powerful energizing and regenerating stone it revitalizes, cleansing, purifies, balances and creates serenity or passion as appropriate.  It inspires love and devotion, and aids sexual potency.  It is a stone of commitment, strengthening the survival instinct, and bringing courage and hope. 

Hematite – grounds, protects, and harmonizes the mind, body and spirit; dissolves negativity; enhances willpower and reliability; and imparts confidence.  It treats over-eating, smoking and any form of over-indulgence.

Iron Pyrite – an energy shield, blocking out negative energy and pollutants.  Worn around the neck, it protects all the subtle and physical bodies, deflecting harm and danger.  It overcomes inertia, feelings of inadequacy, taps into abilities and potential, stimulates the flow of ideas, promotes diplomacy, relieves anxiety and frustration, accelerates mental activity as it increases blood flow to the brain, expands and structures mental capabilities, balances instinct with intuition and creativity with analysis.  It is helpful for alleviating deep despair, increases energy and overcomes fatigue, blocks energy leaks, increases oxygen supply to the blood, treats bones, stimulates cellular formation, repairs DNA damage, aligns the meridians, aids sleep that is disturbed by gastric upset, strengthening the digestive tract and neutralizing ingested toxins.  It alleviates asthma and bronchitis.

Jade – a symbol of purity and serenity, it signifies wisdom, increases love and nurturing, is protective, brings harmony and attracts good luck.  It brings insightful dreams and aids emotional release, encouraging the bearer to become who they really are.  It is also a cleansing stone, aiding the body’s filtration and elimination organs.  It treats the kidneys, supra-adrenal glands, skeleton, hips and spleen.

Jasper – unifies all aspects of life, reminds people to help each other.  It is the supreme nurturer, aligns the chakras, provides protection, absorbs negative energy and imparts determination to all pursuits.

Labradorite – deflects unwanted energies, prevents energy leakage and is a highly mystical and protective stone and bringer of light.  It stimulates intuition and psychic gifts bringing messages from the unconscious mind to the surface, calming an overactive mind, and energizing the imagination. 

Lapis Lazuli -- stimulates enlightenment, enhances dream work and psychic abilities, stimulating spiritual power.   It teaches the power of the spoken word and brings deep inner harmony.  It is a powerful thought amplifier, stimulating the higher faculties of the mind and bringing objectivity and clarity.  It alleviates pain especially that of migraine headaches.

Lavender Chalcedony – helps acceptance of new situations, imparts mental flexibility and verbal dexterity, enhances listening skills, improves memory, improves self-perception, clears illnesses associated with weather changes, aids regeneration of mucus membranes, has an anti-inflammatory effect, lowers temperature and blood pressure, heals the lungs and clears the respiratory system.

Lepidolite -- assists one in openness and honesty, furthering the openness and honesty of those in close proximity.  It can induce the attribute of self-love, bringing child-like love and acceptance to the user.  It can assist in soothing the nervous system, stabilizing the flow of blood and calming the heart.

Mookaite – known as Australian Jasper, it provides a useful balance between inner and outer experiences, imparting both a desire for new experiences and a deep calm with which to face them.  It increases psychological flexibility and encourages versatility, pointing out all possibilities and assisting in choosing the right one.  It is physically stabilizing, fortifies the immune system, heals wounds and purifies the blood.

Moonstone – strongly connected to the moon and intuition, this stone is reflective and reminds us of the cycles of change in our lives.  It calms the emotions, enhances psychic abilities and encourages other psychic gifts.  It has a powerful effect upon the female reproductive cycle and it elevates menstrual related dis-ease and tension, balancing the hormonal cycle. 

Moss Agate -- a stabilizing stone that refreshes the soul and enables the ability to see beauty in everything.  It lessens pain and releases spiritual blockages, attracting abundance, improving self-esteem and strengthening positive personality traits. 

Obsidian -- provides a shield against negativity, transforming negative vibrations within an environment.  It is quite useful in healing, providing both the healer and subject with clarity with respect to both the cause and the amelioration of the dis-ease.

Orbicular Jasper -- eliminates toxins, resonates and facilitates circular breathing, instills patience, supports service, and assists in accepting responsibility. 

Prehnite – a stone of unconditional love and one that heals the healer.  It enhances visualization processes and induces deep meditation to contact the Higher Self, putting the bearer in touch with the universe’s energy grid, and is said to connect with the Archangel Raphael and other spiritual and extraterrestrial beings.  It enhances precognition and inner knowing, enables the bearer to always be prepared, attuning to divine energies and showing the bearer the way forward for spiritual growth.  It alleviates nightmares and phobias and is beneficial for hyperactive children and the karmic causes of the condition.  It helps to declutter and organize.  It heals the kidneys and bladder, thymus gland, shoulders, chest and lungs, treating gout, blood disorders, repairing connective tissue.

Red Jade – is the most passionate and stimulating form of jade.  It accesses anger and releases tension in a manner that becomes constructive.

Red Jasper -- grounds energy, rectifies unjust situations, brings problems to light before they become to big, calms the emotions, helps dream recall, stimulates the base chakra, assists in rebirthing, provides insight, cleans and stabilizes the aura.

Rose Quartz – is good for the heart.  A stone of unconditional love and infinite peace, it purifies and opens the heart, bringing deep inner healing and self-love and promoting friendship.  It attracts love and loving relationships, drawing off negative energy, strengthening empathy and sensitivity, and enhancing positive affirmations. 

Serpentine – aids mediation and spiritual exploration, opening psychic abilities and understanding the spiritual basis of life.  It corrects mental and emotional imbalances, cleanses and detoxifies the blood and the body.

Smoky Quartz – grounds, anchors, and at the same time raises vibration during mediations.  A protective stone with a strong link to the earth, it is an antidote to stress that fortifies resolve.  It relieves fear, lifts depression and brings emotional calm, dissolving negative emotions. 

Snowflake Obsidian – teaches the value of mistakes as well as success and helps recognize and release stressful mental patterns. 

Strawberry Quartz stimulates the energy center of the heart, filling one’s total person with the feeling of love.  It balances connections between both the astral body and physic system, intrinsic in all.

Tiger’s eye - combines earth energy and sun energy, creating a high vibration state that draws the spiritual energy to earth and grounds simultaneously.  It enhances psychic abilities, protects and assists in accomplishing goals and recognizing inner resources. 

Tiger Iron – a combination of jasper, hematite and tiger’s eye, it promotes vitality, and supplies the energy necessary to take action.  It is a creative and artistic stone that brings out inherent talents.

Turquoise - to promote spiritual attunement, enhance communications with the spiritual and physical worlds, explore past lives, clear electromagnetic smog. A stone of purification and strength, it helps dispel exhaustion, depression, panic attacks and pollutants in the atmosphere.

Unakite – a stone of vision, it balances emotions with spirituality, provides grounding, and brings a calm and gentle energy.  It releases conditions that inhibit spiritual and psychological growth, reaching the root cause at whatever level.

Variscite – is a stone of encouragement, bringing hope and courage, extremely useful for illness and invalids, and bringing unconditional love.  It is useful for past-life exploration, facilitates visual images of experiences while going deeply into the feelings and experiences of appropriate lives.  It stimulates insights, moves the bearer out of deep despair, does away with pretence, calms nervousness, brings a peaceful heart, and helps to restore depleted energy reserves.  It heals the nervous system; treats abdominal distension and constricted blood flow; regenerates elasticity of veins and skin; neutralizes overacidity; aids gout, gastritis, ulcers, and rheumatism; and relieves cramps.
